Fair Park, a 277-acre entertainment and recreation complex owned by the City of Dallas, is located two miles east of downtown. The park is the year-round home of the Music Hall, Cotton Bowl and eight museums.

The State Fair of Texas offers so many activities and events, we simply can't list all of them! Some highlights include a midway with over 70 attractions, livestock shows and demonstrations, an action-packed dog show, pee-wee stampede, pig races, Birds of the World, Car Show, Truck Show, BMX Bike Show, Starlight Parade, Pirates of the Caribbean Dive Show, and much, much more. Exhibit Building Hours:
During the 24-day State Fair of Texas, the exhibit buildings are open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday - Monday. Buildings close at 9 p.m. each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Midway opening and closing times vary. Visit website for details.

PARKING:
Self parking is available on official State Fair lots for $15 per space. Look for "Official State Fair Parking" signs. Valet parking offered at Grand Ave. (daily) and Haskell/Parry ( Saturdays/Sundays only) for $30. Parking map Spaces marked for the disabled are located in each lot. First come, first serve. If spaces are filled, an attendant will direct you to the next available spaces. The parking fee applies.

Meet and Greet U.S. Troops at DFW Airport

Anywhere from 150 to 250 troops come through DFW airport each day on their way home for a two-week R&R (Rest and Recuperation). One flight arrives daily at DFW and one departs each day. A small portion meets their families here but the majority will catch connecting flights home. Volunteers gather each day to welcome these troops off their flight, thanking and encouraging them for their service to our great nation. There are many faithful individuals who come almost every day and deem it a privilege to be there; yet still, many more are needed to make this program even better.

All are welcome to participate in the R&R Program. For expected flight arrivals, call (972) 574-0392 for a recorded message. You may call after 8:30 pm the night before, or up until the flight arrives the next morning. Though most flights are arrive between 7:00 am and 9:00 am. Please be flexible as this changes, sometimes last-minute. You will want to check the recording several times in the morning before coming to the airport.

The troops arrive at Terminal D, Gate 22. You may park in the lot located on the ground level. You will walk across to greet the troops in the Arrival Hall. Parking passes will be issued as you arrive so there is no parking fee or charge to your toll tag (toll tags must be taken down before entering the airport, since we are unable to reimburse toll tags).

Tips:

Signs: Homemade signs are welcome! You can even leave them, and the onsite coordinator will see that they’re displayed!
Food: Welcome treats are permissible (phone cards and gum are great!). Simple is best. NO home baked items are allowed - only prepackaged items!
Water: Bottled water is a big hit! You don’t need to bring ice or coolers. Bring your water and give it to the onsite coordinator and she will ice it down for the following day.
Clothes: Wear patriotic colors!
Flags: There are some flags available onsite, but please return them for later use (or bring some flags with you).
Line-up: Families of troops and Veterans line up in front of the greeting area. All other volunteers will go behind them.
Cell Phones: You’re welcome to offer troops the use of your cell phone to call home as they arrive. The best place to do this is outside, as they wait for their buses.
Scheduling: You should plan 2 hours out of your day (driving, parking, greeting & return) - a small price compared with those of our soldiers.

The Friends of the Lewisville Library Used Book Sale will be held Saturday, July 17, and Sunday, July 18, at the Library Public Library. Saturday’s sale will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. at the library, 1197 W. Main Street.

New and gently used books, music, movies, audio books, children’s books, and more will be available. There will be more than 10,000 items for sale. On Sunday after 3 p.m., those purchasing a full bag will get another entire bag of items for just $5.

Those attending Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. will need to enter the library via the Municipal Annex.

Callie's Kids - Free Gardening Workshops at Calloway's

Exclusively for kids, enjoy a summer adventure into the garden with the family. Visit any of our garden centers the first or third Wednesday in June, July and August at 9:30.

Children will learn how to recycle and reuse household items, so start saving your tin cans, cardboard rolls and egg cartons today! Then, come in to any Calloway’s or Cornelius Nursery location so you can plant, color, learn and explore plants and nature with one of our garden experts. Mark your calendars for these summer events!

Callie’s Kids is designed for children 5 to 12 years of age. Space is limited. Parent supervision and assistance is required. No more than three children per adult, please. Large groups should call and arrange a separate session at a later time. Each session lasts 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Classes are offered at all Calloway’s and Cornelius Nursery locations. Classes are filled first-come, first-served. Complete the online registration form to secure your spot!

July 7 - 9:30 a - Talking Plant Pals
Children will decorate plastic cups with a face, then plant grass seed. The grass will grow quickly, giving the pot-face a thick head of green hair!

July 21 - 9:30 am - Feathered Friends in the Garden
Children will make pretend binoculars from cardboard rolls then learn to scope out the helpful birds in our gardens. Children are encouraged to bring their own empty cardboard rolls.

August 4 - 9:30 am - Mighty Texas Trees
Children will make leaf rubbings from four of Texas’ popular trees. Then they will color a drawing of a Live Oak and learn ways to identify the mighty trees of Texas.

August 18 - 9:30 am - Eggscellent Flowers
Children will make flowers from egg cartons and pipe cleaners while they learn to identify several popular Texas flowers. Children are encouraged to bring their own empty egg carton.

Short-track racing under the lights returns to Texas Motor Speedway this summer with Thursday Night Summer Stampede, beginning June 17.

Drivers of all ages will compete in seven classes in one of the most recognized events for short-track drivers in the country – Bando Bandits (8-12 years old), Bando Outlaws (12 and up), Thunder Car (16 and up), Legends Young Lions (12-16), Legends Semi-Pro (16-40), Legends Masters (Over 40) and Legends Pro.

Gates for the Summer Stampede open each Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. CT, with practice running from 7-7:45 p.m. Racing begins at 8:05 p.m. Tickets are $5, and children 5-and-under receive free admission.
Thursday Night Summer Stampede also will feature special promotions every week during the 10-week period.

Summer Reading for Kids

Summertime... a time of parks, pools, and playdates.

Yet summertime can also mean a loss of reading skills for some. "Young readers who don't continue to read over the summer — especially those who are reluctant or at-risk — are likely to lose crucial ground. One summer off can sometimes mean a whole school year of struggling academic performance."

Fortunately, there are many incentive programs to encourage kids to read this summer.

Businesses such as Borders Books, Barnes and Noble, Half Price Books, Pizza Hut, and Chuck E. Cheese offer prizes such as free books, tokens, and gift cards.

Libraries not only offer prizes, but encourage readers to visit the library through a variety of summer activities and events. Magicians, clowns, animal trainers, and other performers entertain kids while offering reading suggestions.

Since it began over 20 years ago, the Cross Timbers Classic has become well known for its beautiful, rural courses and fun, friendly volunteers. All rides include an exclusive opening lap around the Speedway track with the 30m, 50m, 100k and 100m continuing through the beautiful North Texas countryside.

This year the Texas Motor Speedway’s 1.5 mile oval is open to CTC riders until noon, leaving plenty of time to experience a fun and safe way for young ones to ride!

REGISTRATION: Register on-line or mail entry form at www.cross-timbers.org between now and May 10th for $30, after May 10th, registration is $35. Children under 12 will receive a reduced fee of $15.

TIME: The 100-k and 100-mile rides begin at 7:30 am, the 50-mile and 30-mile rides beginning at 8:00 am, the 10-mile and Family Ride beginning at 8:30 am, with the BoyScout 10-mile ride beginning at 9:00 am.

ROUTES: Choose from 10 mi, 30 mi, 50 mi, 100k and 100 mile rides.
This year's CTC offers unlimited laps around the 1.5 mile track. Choose a Family Fun 3 mile ride, or continue with laps for a 10 mile ride.

Easter Egg Hunts

We're getting to that "age"...

While my 8 year old still enjoys many of the traditional Egg Hunts around town, along with the various activities they often include (face painting, crafts, etc.), my 11 year old claims she's getting a little old for that. She enjoys all of the candy and treats; she just doesn't want to be seen by her friends holding an Easter basket picking up plastic eggs. Such is the life of a pre-teen.

This year, we've put together a great list of Easter Eggs Hunts in our area, and a couple of them my 11 year old is even willing to try out - The after-dark egg hunt for 11-15 year olds, and The Underwater Egg Hunt at the Flower Mound CAC.

Overnights are available Friday and Saturday nights to groups of 15-75 people, ages 7-13 years. Smaller groups of 4-14 people may schedule an overnight, but will be put with other groups to meet the minimum number of participants. Your overnight will include:

* There are three Wheel of Fortune shows during each day of a Wheelmobile event. Each show lasts approximately one hour.
* Everyone who comes to a Wheelmobile event will receive a color-coded application. The color of the application tells you what time the game you are eligible for will begin.
* Fill out your application and drop it in a nearby receptacle. Just before show time, we will put all the applications in a big golden drum that sits on the stage.
* When the show begins, our Wheelmobile host will pick applications at random from the drum and call participants up to the stage (in groups of five) to play the game.
* On stage, we will do a brief interview with each contestant and play a version of the Wheel of Fortune Speed-Up Round.
* Each person who comes up to the stage will be evaluated as a potential contestant for the show. At the end of the puzzle all contestants on stage will be awarded a prize. (Wheel of Fortune hats, t-shirts and duffle bags are just some of the stuff you might win.
* Wheel of Fortune is looking for good game players who are energetic, enthusiastic and fun. This is your opportunity to shine. Show us what you've got!
* After the Wheelmobile event in your area has been conducted, we will choose the people we believe will be the best candidates for the show (based on their overall performance on stage) to take part in a final round of auditions. These final auditions will take place in the North Texas area within a few months after our last event date.We will get as many people up to the stage as we can. However, we know there will be many more folks at our Wheelmobile events than we can possibly audition. For this reason, we will reserve some slots in the final auditions for those individuals who attended Wheelmobile events but did not make it up to the stage. After all Wheelmobile events have been conducted, we will draw a number of names at random from all the applications we receive in the North Texas area for these slots.
* If you are invited to the final auditions, you will receive a letter or email within a few weeks of our last Wheelmobile event.

What are the contestant eligibility requirements?

Teen Court in Flower Mound / Lewisville

What is Teen Court?
Teen Court is a voluntary, alternate judicial process for juveniles who have received Class C misdemeanor citations. Juvenile defendants who are referred to Teen Court are sentenced to community service hours, jury duty, and any other constructive sentence by a jury of their peers.

Teen Court is usually held every other Tuesday evening at the Lewisville Municipal Annex or Flower Mound Municipal Court starting at 6:00 p.m.

The courtroom is a formal and serious place and respect is required in regard to proper dress. It is suggested that females wear dresses, skirts, or nice slacks, males in nice slacks and shirts with collars. NO caps, T-shirts, shorts, tank tops, midriff tops, halter tops, or torn clothing is allowed. Teen Court reserves the right to deny admission into the courtroom to anyone inappropriately dressed. Dress Code strictly enforced: No shorts or blue jeans.

As we approach Valentine’s Day, let’s not forget the men and women who serve our country. Valentines can be as simple or elaborate as you’d like. If you’d like to participate, you can make as many or as few as you choose.

Helpful Tips:
* Do not attach any candy or treats.
* Try not to use craft materials that can break away from your valentine. They may be shipped anywhere in the world, and you want your cards to be as beautiful when they’re read as when they were made.
* Tell a little about yourself (age, school, likes) but do not include your last name, phone number or address.
* If you make more than one valentine, please do not put individual valentines in sealed envelopes (obviously, you’ll need one sealed envelope to mail your valentines in).
* Remember to sign your valentine with your first name only.
* Tell them why you appreciate them.

Family Fun on a Budget - Silly Fun

Sometimes kids (and parents) just need to get silly. Throw caution to the wind and try some of these off-the-wall ideas to get your family laughing and playing.

Have a Silly Day
Schedule a whole day of silliness. Start with having dinner for breakfast and breakfast for dinner. Make your meals even sillier by making funny faces with gravy in your mashed potatoes or with syrup on your pancakes. Sprinkle something fun on your pizza, like frosted flakes or candy sprinkles. Wear silly clothes, like mismatched socks and t-shirts on backwards or inside out. Learn how to say each other's names backwards. Let your kids know you're going to be celebrating Silly Saturday or Silly Sunday next weekend, and have them create some silly activities that you can all enjoy.

* Kiss your elbow?
* Touch your tongue to the tip of your nose?
* Peel a banana with your feet?
* Curl your tongue?
* Do the splits?
* Raise one eyebrow?

Place the top of your head and the palms of your hands on the floor in the shape of a triangle, with the your head being on the top of the triangle. Now, one at a time, try to put a knee on each elbow. Make sure you have plenty of room... chances are you may topple a few times before succeeding!

Learn to juggle
With younger kids, do a "family juggle." Families stand in a small circle, with each person holding a small ball or beanbag. At the same time, Mom throws to dad, dad throws to sister, sister throws to mom, mom throws to dad. Do that over and over again. Start out slow and go as fast as you can.

Lip Sync to TV
Turn on the TV, and put it on mute. Have friends and family each choose a character on the screen and make up dialog when that person speaks. Be spontaneous or suggest participants pretend it's a certain type of show (very dramatic, silly, sad).

Go online to find tongue twisters - your kids will love it!

Learn a Line Dance - Classics include:

* Chicken Dance

Christmas Lights in DFW

My family and I love cruising around town looking at Christmas lights. We usually try to invite a friend or family member for a spontaneous 30-45 minute drive - great for after dinner, even on a school night. We all ooh and aah over the various display elements. This week we saw Santa on a See-Saw with 3 reindeer on the opposing side, and one house that's lights actually twinkled. But the best display in our neighborhood is the Flower Mound Christmas display, put on by Harrison Ward and his wife, Valerie. It's located just northwest of Morriss and 3040 (which is just 3 minutes from our home - ideal). Their display is timed to music, which the kids absolutely LOVE! Afterwards, we always head home for hot chocolate. Such fun!

Family Fun on a Budget - Outdoor Fun for Kids

When the kids have a break from school, there's often a lot of time to fill. That doesn't mean you have to break the bank with expensive activities and entertainment. Here are some fun ideas of things you can do in your own neighborhood - or your own backyard:

Get Outdoors

Go to the Park
Go for a hike
Ride Bikes
Feed the ducks
Go to the lake
Have a picnic (indoors, too)
Photo Safari - make a list of items outdoors. Let your child use your digital camera to document each item they find on the list.

Backyard

Gardening - Plant flowers in little pots that the kids have decorated. Plant an edible garden. Tend to your plants all season long, watering, weeding, and harvesting.
Can it Float? Make a miniature boat out of household items/recycling. See if it floats in a bucket or backyard pool (or the bathtub). Attempt to put very small toys in the "boat" to see how much weight it can hold. You may need to help young ones with things like cutting a plastic bottle, but try not to give them too much direction so they can see the results of their experiment. When they’re done, suggest ways they could improve next time (i.e. don’t use Scotch tape or cardboard).
Set up a Tent - Whether it's for an afternoon, or overnight, kids will love the idea of camping in their own backyard - or indoors!
Paint Outdoors - Let the kids use washable paint to create a masterpiece on your sidewalk, driveway or fence!
Puddle Fun - Kids love puddles. Let them enjoy splashing around and getting as dirty and wet as they'd like. Be sure to have plenty of towels and clean, dry clothes ready!
Wash the Dog - If Fido is cooperative, let the kids get out the hose and bucket and wash the dog. They’ll giggle with joy, while chasing it around with soap and towels.
Wash the Car - Let the kids get messy and wet as they clean your car or van.
Shaving Cream Fun - Set the kids up in the backyard with some inexpensive shaving cream and some food coloring. Let them go to town. (Great in the bathtub, too)
Star Gazing - Share your knowledge, even if it’s limited to the Big Dipper and Venus. Moonless skies are best for seeing the stars, but moon-gazing is fun, too. If you don’t have a telescope, an ordinary pair of binoculars will help.

Halloween Safety Tips

OK... I don't know that this really qualifies as a blog post, but this blogging is harder than I thought it would be. But I did think it was important to share these safety tips before we send our kids out for all of the fun Halloween activities.

City of Lewisville offers Halloween safety tips

With witches, goblins, and super-heroes descending on neighborhoods across the country, the American Red Cross offers parents some safety tips to help prepare their children for a safe and enjoyable trick-or-treat holiday. Halloween should be filled with surprise and enjoyment, and following some common sense practices can keep events safer and more fun.

Walk, slither, and sneak on sidewalks, not in the street.
Look both ways before crossing the street to check for cars, trucks, and low-flying brooms.
Cross the street only at corners.
Don't hide or cross the street between parked cars.
Wear light-colored or reflective-type clothing so you are more visible. (And remember to put reflective tape on bikes, skateboards, and brooms, too!)
Plan your route and share it with your family. If possible, have an adult go with you.
Carry a flashlight to light your way.
Keep away from open fires and candles. (Costumes can be extremely flammable.)
Visit homes that have the porch light on.
Accept your treats at the door and never go into a stranger's house.
Use face paint rather than masks or things that will cover your eyes.
Be cautious of animals and strangers.
Have a grown-up inspect your treats before eating. And don't eat candy if the package is already opened. Small, hard pieces of candy are a choking hazard for young children.

Cristina's in Lewisville has added a second night to their deal, Denny's in Lewisville has expanded their deal to 7 days a week (2-10pm), and IHOP, Applebee's, and Jason's Deli (Flower Mound only) have been added to our list.

High School Football - A Family Outing

So... High School Football...

As a mom of 2 young girls, and not necessarily a lover of sports (unless I'm playing), AND a non-native Texan, high school football hasn't been the highlight of my day, week, or even year.

Don't get me wrong. I've really enjoyed the professional football games I've attended (Da Bears!). I've been a die-hard fan at Soldier Field in Chicago in below freezing temperatures on a number of occasions. I used to know all the players names, numbers, and positions in their hayday of the 80s. But I still didn't understand the attraction of high school football.

That was until I went to a game with my kids.

Let me back up a minute...

Last year, my kids came home from school one day, after the high school football players had visited their classrooms. Based on their reaction when I picked them up, I would have sworn that they'd met some real live ROCKSTARS! They were so excited to have gotten a poster with the whole team on it - and each of them had several players who'd autographed their poster.

So, we made plans and attended our first high school football game last year. I have to say... It was kind of cool! The energy is much different at a high school game than a professional game. Everyone is really excited about their home team, and we all ran into friends and neighbors (adults and kids alike). Best of all: I got to watch my 7 year old look at a football player like he was a bone-fide celebrity.

Sometimes I surprise the kids right after school with a quick trip; Sometimes we get together with a group of friends and organize a playdate; Sometimes the whole family heads out to have a picnic.

Passwords - Too Many to Remember?

So... in yesterday's newsletter, we announced our new blog! Yeah! Unfortunately, there hasn't been a post since Monday because we FORGOT our password! Ugh!!

In today's age of ever-growing technology, we seem to have a list of ever-growing passwords and login IDs. Years ago, we were all allowed to have 4 digit passwords, then "they" moved to 6-digits. Now, more and more, "They" are asking for increasingly complicated passwords that have to meet their level of "Strong" before they accept you suggestions.

Additionally, as we use NEW applications, the words or numbers we've used in the past are already "taken." So the list grows... and grows... and grows.

I understand the need for security... We don't want anyone else posting these rants on Family eGuide, do we?!? But I'm SO ready to move forward with some high-tech solution - say optical recognition or fingerprint verification. When do you think they'll have that available for personal use and small businesses?

Support Our Troops

Those of you who "Tweet" know that Monday is officially known as Military Monday. It's a time when people share tweets in support of our U.S. Troops and their families.

One of the things that Family eGuide loves to share, is our Support Our Troops page, which is devoted to ideas and links to help support the men and women who serve our country.

But our personal favorite is Meet and Greet Troops at DFW Airport. It's a great way to get the whole family involved. The kids can make signs, you can pack snacks or gifts for the returning soldiers, and the opportunity is available EVERY day.

When you have a chance, visit our Support Our Troops page. Choose one or two ways that you and your family can get involved. Then share this with your friends, family, church and youth groups. It's an easy way to show that you care.

I love "Kids Eat Free" deals! OK... who doesn't. You get to take the whole family out to dinner - sometimes for less than the price you would pay to make a meal at home. AND (drum roll please) you don't have to cook, clean, do dishes, or hear anyone say "I'm not eating THAT."
